Natural selection among replicators, interactors and transactors.

چکیده
In evolutionary biology and ecology, ontological and epistemological perspectives based on the replicator and the interactor have become the background that makes it possible to transcend traditional biological levels of organization and to achieve a unified view of evolution in which replication and interaction are fundamental operating processes. Using the transactional perspective proposed originally by John Dewey and Arthur Fisher Bentley, a new ontological and methodological category is proposed here: the transactor. The transactional perspective, based on the concept of the transactor, bridges the dichotomy between organisms and environment that characterizes the interactional perspective on evolution and provides epistemological support for the emergentist, systemic view of evolutionary and developmental processes.

Evolutionary Archeology: Current Status and Future Prospects
Any evolutionary investigation is a two-step process. First, lineages are constructed, here artifact lineages; second, explanations are made for the lineages being the way they are.6,7 The first step is the documentation of descent with modification, meaning that sequent phenomena are related through transmission. The second step involves the identification of mechanisms that caused changes or ...
متن کاملReplicators, lineages, and interactors.
The target article argues that whole groups can act as interactors in an evolutionary process. We believe that Smaldino's discussion would be advanced by a more thorough analysis of the appropriate replicators and lineages for this model. We show that cultural evolution is necessarily a separate process from cultural group selection, and we also illustrate that the two processes may influence e...
متن کاملIndividuality and adaptation across levels of selection: how shall we name and generalize the unit of Darwinism?
Two major clarifications have greatly abetted the understanding and fruitful expansion of the theory of natural selection in recent years: the acknowledgment that interactors, not replicators, constitute the causal unit of selection; and the recognition that interactors are Darwinian individuals, and that such individuals exist with potency at several levels of organization (genes, organisms, d...
متن کاملSelection strategies for randomly distributed replicators
The amplification cycle of many replicators (natural or artificial) involves the usage of a host compartment, inside which the replicator express phenotypic compounds necessary to carry out its genetic replication. The compartment limits the diffusion of the intermediate compounds, thereby also maintaining the genotypephenotype linkage enabling natural selection. In most cases however, genotypi...
متن کاملThe natural selection of metabolism and mass selects lifeforms from viruses to multicellular animals
I show that the natural selection of metabolism and mass can select for the major life-history and allometric transitions that define lifeforms from viruses, over prokaryotes and larger unicells, to multicellular animals. The proposed selection is driven by a mass-specific metabolism that is selected as the pace of the resource handling that generates net energy for self-replication. An initial...
